Have you ever sat with a decision so long that it starts to feel heavy in your body? It's a bit like being energetically waterlogged. You go over it again and again, imagining every possible outcome - hoping the answer will suddenly appear. But instead of clarity, you just feel stuck. This is commonly known as 'analysis paralysis'. Your head chatter is on full volume, but your heart is quiet.
When we get caught in overthinking, it’s easy to lose touch with the steady, quiet sense of what feels right for us. Often, the answer only comes when we find a way to step out of our head and back into our body.
I want to invite you to consider navigating choices from an 'energy first' perspective - I call this the subtle art of knowing what’s right for you - and it begins by tapping in to the signs and signals we may have learned to ignore.
Follow The Frequency
In energy work, 'frequency' is a way of describing the energetic quality of something - whether it's a person, a place, a decision, or even a thought. The movement of that energy is often referred to as 'vibration', though the two terms are frequently used interchangeably.
Everything carries a vibration. Some things feel light, open, and energising (what we might call high-vibe). Others feel heavy, tight, or draining (low-vibe). We may not always be able to explain why, but our body knows. Many empaths, for example, are particularly sensitive to these subtle shifts and can feel them deeply.
Think of frequency and vibration like music. Some songs immediately lift our mood, while others feel flat or heavy. The decisions we make in life often work the same way. Certain options carry a clear resonance, or an energetic “yes” that feels aligned and true. They don’t just make practical sense; we feel the 'right' in our bones.
What about logic?
Not so long ago, I bought tickets to see a world famous speaker who I had admired for years. Admittedly, when I first looked at the event online, something within me said "pass". But, as tickets began to dwindle, the fear of missing out kicked in. I reasoned that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity - how could we not go?!
Weeks later, we arrived at the venue and that 'logic' hit me like a brick - I had committed to something I actually didn't want to sit through, especially after work. The energy was completely off. My brain had been so intent on overriding my body and doing it anyway, that it had raided my savings account and dragged my exhausted husband along for the ride. If I had been present enough to feel and act on what was true for me from the outset, I would be $250 richer and about 5 hours happier.
Understanding the frequency of a situation doesn’t mean we throw logic out the window - it just means we recognise that logic and energy offer different kinds of guidance.
Sometimes, we can have all the information laid out clearly and still feel uncertainty pulling on our jumper with it's tiny "are you sure about that?" hands. Take note! When we tune into frequency, we shift from thinking to sensing. From this perspective we can turn down the mental noise and uncover the knowing that is always within us.
Tuning In
We don’t need to be spiritual or deeply intuitive to make choices this way. All it takes is a willingness to slow down and start paying attention to subtleties.
Here are a few ways to get started:
Notice how your body responds: When you imagine each option, what happens in your body? Does your breath ease? Do your shoulders relax? Or does your chest tighten?
Look for resonance: Resonance feels like “yes.” It might show up as relief, peace, curiosity, or a calm sense of 'rightness'.
Ask different questions: Instead of "What should I do?" consider asking:
What decision makes me feel most alive?
Which option brings me closer to who I truly am?
Which path feels aligned with truth, or growth?
Let go of the need to explain our decision: Sometimes, the only reason we need is that it feels right.
Making Decisions That Fit
Aligned decisions often challenge us, stretch us, or invite us into the unknown. They can feel spot on, confronting, and don't always equate to taking the easy road. That said, there is something internally supportive about a decision that is made with resonance at it's core. There’s a steadiness and trust that, even if it’s not all mapped out, we're on the right track.
Alternatively, misaligned choices might look perfect from the outside, but they inevitably drain us from within. Choosing something from a place of fear or lack, for example, often requires us to shrink or override ourselves to make it work.
Developing Self-Trust
Over time, as we tune in to our internal compass, we develop a kind of self trust that recognises that our body, energy and intuition are fluent in a language much deeper than logic.
The more we practice feeling into decisions, the more we notice that resonance doesn’t lead us astray. We begin to trust the pull toward what lights us up, and the gentle resistance that guards us from what dims our unique spark.
Next time you’re stuck, let frequency be your friend. Take a breath, drop into your body and listen for the hum of what feels right. Notice how your energy responds - your body already knows the answer.
